For the better part of a decade now, Netflix has become arguably the most popular form of streaming movies and shows. Though in more recent years Netflix has created their own exclusive series and films – you’re probably very familiar with the Netflix Originals, and like us, always watch the latest releases. A lot of times these series attract quite an audience and begin to trend everywhere. The social media universe lights up.
In walks the newest popular series to take off: Squid Game. Unless you live under a rock, you’ve probably either binged the show or heard tons of people in your office talking about it. It’s pretty out there but in a “what the hell is going on? I need to know what happens,” kinda way.
The 9-episode series is a cross between Saw and a satire emulating our Capitalistic society. The greed surrounding financial gain comes at the expense of others’ wellbeing. Yes, the individuals participating are volunteering… or simply, they see no other option.
Overall, I felt they encompassed the turmoil and urgency, along with lengths people will go in the name of greed. A story that can be seen adapted throughout the centuries due to its relatable natural human elements. Overall, the story was really good. It has been stated that the English subtitles did not translate in the most optimal form, therefore I think it has more potential.
Aside from the solid storyline, the cinematography and overall aesthetic was also dystopian-like. Bold and solid colors were used to increase the eerie factor, but also bring an element of art. The bold and bright colors definitely enhance the horror factor.
As far as horror series, this one sits somewhere at the top of my list, simply for the thrill factor. I needed to see what happened next and therefore this one was a binge for me.
